FACES OF EMERGING WOMEN
As a continuation to my Faces of Emerging Men series, I felt compelled to shoot the Faces of Emerging Women. I didn’t have the same clarity going into this phase of the project. I knew that, during adolescence, the physical face transforms more dramatically for boys than for girls. I went into the shoot open to letting the essence of the project to reveal itself as I photographed each Emerging Woman. I quickly learned that it was more about capturing these young people's emotional rather than physical transformation. The complexity and maturity of the women was more profound as well. Just by looking at their faces, I could see the wheels turning in their brains. And while each boy's face had been an open canvas, the girls seemed more cautious about revealing who they were. I believe that I was witnessing the effect of our culture written across an entire gender, a culture that assigns women to age categories of "young" and "old" without offering any clear options in between.
